Changing the narrative as a Woman in Security

October 01, 2021 | by Cátia da Silva | My Path to Provincial

A Mother on the Front Line

“When I first came to Ireland I worked as a housekeeper in a five-star hotel and I progressed from there. I began training newcomers and then I was given the opportunity to move to accounts which I accepted. I learnt a lot in my one year there.”

“Just as I was getting into my new role, the pandemic struck. It decimated the hotel trade and because my contract was only valid for a year I found myself out of a job. I was also pregnant.”

“They are very family orientated. They worry about you and your life. They know for example that I have a child and they always try to manage my working life around that. They are very accommodating”

“I spent nine months at home with my baby and that was lovely; a time I will always remember. But I needed to get back out into the workforce because I was a little bit done with being at home twenty-four hours a day.”

“With the pandemic, I really didn’t think anyone was hiring.”

“My husband suggested I get into security. He had been working with Provincial for a while and he was always telling me how great they are. At first, I really didn’t want to. In my head, I just didn’t think it was a good fit. I was a little afraid to be honest, and just kept thinking it was for big men so wouldn't suit me. I decided to take the course for the PSA licence anyway, went for the interview with Provincial and here I am. I’m a security officer for one of the world’s biggest companies in Dublin.”

“When women think about security, they don’t think it’s for us. They think it is only for big, strong men. But there is so much more to it than that. We just need to be ourselves and know how to do the job.”

“I really like my role and I really like the company. Provincial are very family orientated. They worry about you and your life. They know that I have a child and they always try to manage my working life around that. They are very accomodating. If I need something that they can help me with they always do. I have never worked for such a good company before. I can see that they care about their employees which is really important for me.”

Women in Security

“Before I started with Provincial I didn’t think there would be as many women as there are, and of course there are more than security roles in Provincial, but I have to say there were more women than I thought.”

“There could of course be more but I think some of that is on us too. I think when women think about security, they don’t think it’s for us. They think it is only for big strong men. But there is so much more to it than that. We just need to be ourselves and know how to do the job.”

“Provincial are very family orientated...They know that I have a child and they always try to manage my working life around that. They are very accommodating.”

“I have never felt uncomfortable in my job because I am a woman; nobody patronises me or tells me how to do something. If you’re a woman that wants to work in security, you don't need to be afraid. You only have to use your empathy, give one hundred percent and you’ll be great.”

“I have been with Provincial for six months now and I know that the prospects of progression here are good. I hope to build a career with the company. Certainly, I’m the type of person who likes to get on and go bigger so I would like that very much.”
